Acoustic Wave Generation in a CIJ Ink Cavity Produced by Jet Stimulation and Its Effects on Droplet Behavior.
Stimulation of the array of continuous ink jets produced by the KodakStream droplet generator is accomplished by modulating the temperature of theink as it exits a nozzle. Perturbationof the surface tension and viscosity of the ink cause the cylindrical jet tobecome unstable and, under the proper conditions, results in the jet breakingup into droplets having uniform volume, velocity, and break off times. For the Stream printhead currently underdevelopment, the position and timing of the droplet breakoff is critical forproper operation.
This method of thermal jet stimulation, however, also produces a small modulation of the jet flowrate which, in turn, appears toproduce a small pressure disturbance which can propagate into the common inkcavity feeding the array. When certainspatial patterns of jets are stimulated, these pressure perturbations can actcollectively and disrupt the stimulation process of many of the jets. This can, subsequently, interfere with thedroplet control necessary for acceptable printing. This talk presents experimental evidence for,and a simple theory of, these self-induced pressurewaves, along with an attempt to reduce and/or eliminate them.
